Jonathan Ned Katz is best known as a historian and the author of Gay American History (1976), Gay/Lesbian Almanac (1983), The Invention of Heterosexuality (1995), and Love Stories: Sex Between Men Before Homosexuality (2001). He founded OutHistory.org, the website on LGBT history. He has taught at Yale and Princeton.

As a teen Katz won competitive entry as an art major to New York’s prestigious public High School of Music and Art. He later worked for twelve years as a textile designer. After becoming active in the gay liberation movement in 1971, Katz began his first research on homosexual history and compiled a documentary play, Coming Out!, which was produced by New York City’s Gay Activists Alliance in 1972.

The first solo show of Jonathan Ned Katz’s art work, curated by art historian Jonathan David Katz, opens at the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York City, Saturday, February 16, 2013 and continues through Sunday, March 31, 2013. The two Katzes are not related.
