About the Ebook
"Besloten Hofje" is Dutch for "Dedicated Courtyard" and refers to a group of reliquary shrines created in the time period between the late fifteenth century and the first half of the sixteenth century. Twenty-two of these silk flower shrines exist today and can be found from Arras, France in the south-west to Walsrode, Germany in the north-east.
The greatest concentration of Besloten Hofje reside in Mechelen, Belgium where most of the shrines are thought to have originated. This book explores the religious and social environments that witnessed the creation of these shrines and examines some of the elements that went into the original reliquary shrines.
