About the Ebook
GVSU Ravines: A Field Guide contains information that can be applied anywhere in the West Michigan area, but is particularly applicable to the ravines of the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Allendale campus. All of the common deciduous trees of the ravines are included, each with pictures, identifying information, and interesting facts. The book also includes many types of wild edibles that can be easily found in the ravines and in the area at large. Each wild edible is described in detail and general instructions for the preparation and cooking of each plant is provided. There are also sections with selected photos from the ravines, common wildlife of the ravines, and basic bushcraft skills. The bushcraft section covers information such as having a survival plan, starting a fire, shelter-building, and finding clean water. The final section is a trail guide to the ravines which consists of aerial photos with overlaid trail maps; most of the trails have the distance provided and a few have elevation profiles. All photography was done in the GVSU ravines and that, as well as the artwork included (with the exception of the aerial photos) was all done specifically for the book. This field guide serves as a useful pocket companion to have when exploring the ravines or when going to Michigan parks in general.
