About the Ebook
This book is a very personal contemporary view of Sheffield City Centre. All the images were taken within a half mile radius of the Town Hall, finding new viewpoints in order to develop more abstract compositions. It does not provide sweeping open vistas of Sheffield, instead I take a minimalist view and focus on detail, texture, shape, abstract design and colour. On visiting the City on any given day I took as my inspiration the quality of the light and did not follow any pattern or go to any specific area, I just went where the light took me. St Ives in Cornwall is often spoken about by artists as having a special quality of light and this is true, but this quality of light can also appear in any part of the UK even in Sheffield, maybe not as often but it still exists from time to time.
What I was interested in here was to create composites of the architectural details of some of the most interesting buildings in Sheffield City centre, bringing together elements of design from different buildings into one abstract image. I have not captioned any of the images but instead provided a list of the buildings at the front of the book. All the photographs in this book were downloaded to my iPad for interpretation and composite work. The artist David Hockney RA used his iPad in a similar way to produce some of his artworks for his recent exhibition "A Bigger Picture" at the Royal Academy of Arts.
