Photographs by Ruth Rosengarten and José Francisco Azevedo
José Francisco Azevedo lives in Portugal, Ruth Rosengarten lives in England. We didn’t know each other before we were brought together for a two-person exhibition at the Artistas Unidos in Lisbon (15.11.2012 – 15.12.2012). Yet there are similarites in how we think of a photographic subject: we both seem to seek out the non-event, the opposite of ‘the decisive moment’ that famously distinguishes photography from other arts. These are photographs of in-between spaces.

About the Author
Born in Israel, where I spent the first nine years of my life, I then lived in South Africa, London and Portugal, before settling again in England, where I now live and work. I completed a Fine Arts Degree at Wits University, Johannesburg, and both M.A. and Ph.D. in History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. I've exhibited and published variously. My studio practice of late has entailed drawing and photography, and in my writing over recent years, I have also been exploring aspects of drawing and photography, with special interest in memory, documentation and the archive.
