A Daughter's Tribute
Marta Fuchs' Legacy of Rescue: A Daughter's Tribute tells the story of the author's father, Morton (Miksa) Fuchs, and Zoltán Kubinyi, the man who saved him and over 100 other Hungarian Jewish men during the Holocaust as the Commanding Officer of their forced labor battalion in the final year of the war. Due to Morton Fuchs' testimony, Zoltán Kubinyi, a Hungarian devout Seventh Day Adventist, was posthumously honored by Yad Vashem as a Righteous Among the Nations.
The book is an intergenerational memoir with photos and testimony by the author's parents (including aunts who survived Auschwitz with Marta's mother), her own recollections of childhood in Hungary and escape to the U.S. in the wake of the 1956 Revolution, and memories by the grandchildren of their beloved Grandfather who died in 2000.
The story of rescue comes full circle in the summer of 2011 when the author and her brother took their children to visit Zoltán Kubinyi's family in Hungary. With Kubinyi's son, wife, and granddaughters -- the great grandchildren of Zoltán Kubinyi -- the author and her family talked about the compassionate and heroic actions of this man none of them knew but who has made an indelible impact on all our lives.
Percentage of proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Morton & Ilona E. Fuchs Award at Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center in CA. The award gives recognition to B’nai Mitzvah students for devotion to their studies, service to the Temple, and tikkun olam, repairing the world though community service.
