About the Ebook
I photographed the Hopi Social Dance Group – Homolovi - on
July 5 & 6, 2008. I had this unique opportunity when the Homolovi group was scheduled to perform in Flagstaff's Heritage Square during the Fourth of July weekend. I invited them to use the Flagstaff Photography Center to change into their traditional clothes. I set up a studio space and made these photos prior to and after their performances.
I have been photographing American Indians throughout my forty year career as a freelance photographer. My book, Honor Dance celebrates my work with Native Americans. In the preface to Honor Dance, William Albert Allard, National Geographic photographer, wrote the following about me:
"Running is perhaps best known for his photographs of Indians,
but instead of considering himself a specialist, he considers
himself to be simply a photographer of people. This is an
important distinction. The kind of approach this photographer
takes in his work is transferable to any part of the world, to any
society. He is never just photographing the trappings of religious beliefs or the costumes of ideology; he is always photographing human beings."

About the Creator
John Running has lived in Flagstaff, Arizona for the past 40 years. He has been making photographs for advertising, design and editorial clients for over 35 years. He specializes in photographing people on location or in the studio. His photographs stand out because they have a style that is personally creative and graphically strong. Give him 1/125th of a second and he will give you so much more. Running has been photographing the female nude for all of his 35 years as a professional photographer. The women he photographs are both sensual and strong. His photographs are collaboration with his models where there is room for each to express their creativity. His work reminds us that eroticism is yet another culturally laden value that depends on choices made by its consumers to be effective.
